Sculpture

in Snow

This was my second design for a snow sculpture, and the first created from scratch for this particular material, scale and competition setting.

A sophisticated composition topologically, and exceedingly tricky to execute in snow at full scale, there was little room for error - the intricate forms of the perforations (holes) required surfaces and edges to maintain an accuracy of about one inch.

The interior heart-shaped image on face A is actually a playful optical illusion, and the alignment of the holes, struts and surfaces of side B creates several visual surprises.  By design. this piece needed to be pondered: walked around several times to be understood and appreciated.

A photo of this compelling sculpture still appears on the official event website.
